Best Outdoor Locations in Kenya

Mount Kenya

Snow capped Mount Kenya, at 5199 m (17057 ft) is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second highest in Africa, is an important source of water for much of Kenya.Mount Kenya is a composite volcano, which was created over 3 million years after the East African rift opened. It has been covered by an ice cap for thousands of years, resulting in very eroded slopes with numerous valleys radiating from the centre. Currently there are 11 glaciers, which are an important source of water for all of Kenya.

Most people who visit Kenya on safari only get to see the Mountain from a distance, albeit a spectacular view. Even from a distance the mountain is hugely impressive and it is easy to see why it dominates the lives of the people in the area in such a meaningful way - and there are the adventurous few who actually climb the mountain.

Mount Longonot

Rising from the floor of the Great Rift Valley like a monolith is the extinct volcano of Mount Longonot. A unique feature is the thick forest that lies within the crater of the mountain. The crater rim also provides great scenic views across the beautiful Rift Valley all the way to Lake Naivasha. Major wildlife attractions at Mount Longonot include buffaloes, elands, lion, leopard, bushbucks, common zebra, giraffe and Grant’s gazelles.

Spotting the animals (wildlife) is  not guaranteed. Hiking on this mountain takes Approximately 2 hours from the Park Gate to reach the rim of the crater rim and descent back to the gate. The hike going round the crater rim would mean another two hours, thus the total hike takes approximately 4 hours for the round trip.

Karura Forest - Nairobi

Karura Forest Reserve is located in the northern part of Nairobi city. At 1,041 hectares, it is one of the largest urban gazetted forests in the world.  The forest contains nearly all the 605 species of wildlife found in Nairobi including three types of antelope. It is managed by Kenya Forest Service (KFS).

The Forest Service presence makes the trails safe and exceptionally well-maintained. Most of the routes through the forest are rolling but smooth dirt forest roads. The park has mapped various 5, 10, and 15 km running routes, which makes finding a course simple. Main trails are numbered and signposted at every intersection for ease of use.

The forest is open from 6 am to 6 pm daily
